West End Baptist Church began with the heart of God and His desire to see His church expand throughout all the world. In 2001, God laid the call on a young pastor's life to begin a new work of planting a church in the West End of Richmond, with the vision of reaching people with the gospel of Jesus and growing those people into a church family that is loving, strong, passionate, and committed to the Lord and His ways. First Baptist Church of Suffolk (Virginia), the North American Mission Board, the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia, and Englewood Baptist Church (Rocky Mount, North Carolina) all united in the mission of planting a church.
This pastor and his family moved to Richmond in August of 2001. The work immediately began with going to the community with the intention of sharing the good news of Jesus with those who were not Christians, and drawing in Christians to be discipled. The church planter could often be found in front of local businesses meeting people, doing home surveys, and sharing the good news with anyone who would listen. From these interactions in the community, a Bible study began in the pastor's home. On November 18, 2001, West End Baptist Church held its first worship service, with about 35 people in attendance.
Over the next few years, we were built up by the Spirit of God into a community of believers with a love for God and for other people. In February of 2005, West End Baptist Church was officially constituted and transitioned from a church plant into an elder-led church. In 2005, the church also sent out their first missionaries to the Middle East.
After meeting in an office, a hotel, and an elementary school over the course of ten years, God opened the doors in 2011 for us to occupy our own leased building space in Parham Forest Associates at 2844 East Parham Road. The members contributed their own time and effort towards preparing what was once an office and warehouse into a place to gather for worship, learning, and ministry.
The year 2012 would bring another transition as the church commissioned its founding pastor and his family to follow God's leading to take the good news of Christ to the unreached people of Central Asia. On the recommendation of the elders, Kevin Rogers was affirmed by the body as the church's next pastor for the years ahead.
Our story is one that reflects God's desire for all people to hear the gospel.
Today, West End Baptist Church seeks to be the family of God, glorifying Him in all we do. We desire to grow in our love for Jesus and for others, even as our God and King loves all people. And we look forward with anticipation to the great things God will do in the life of His church. To Him be the glory forever and ever!
